Inventive textiles

2001-02-01

from domus 834, 2001 February

Crochet work, knitting, embroidery, and an innate fondness for cloths, yarns and the buttons. A passion cultivated by Daniela Gregis since childhood when she first started experimenting and wearing clothes she made herself, created first for her family and then for all. There was a direct link with the sailing world, where textile is the driving force, with designs for famous yachts like Naj Oleari, Tomahawk, Bribon and Longobarda. Numerous other design experiences followed - also didactic with Domus Academy - in places as far off as California and her beloved Australia, but always in some way related to ''softness'': as can also be seen from the domesticated clothes from her 2001 spring summer collection. These are created by an alchemical matching of poor materials and precious fabrics and linked to the theme of the kitchen as a place of togheterness and sharing. She designs not only clothes, but also household linen, that celebrated the form of technological or traditional kitchens, as presented last autumn at a happening in the new Bulthaup showroom in via Borgonuovo, Milan.
